VHSS Bears Have Winning Record at Home

Friday after school the Bears crushed the Titans in what was the third game played at home. This will position the young Bear squad in about 6th place drawing Delhi or MPSS in the first round of playoffs. The great thing about football is no matter what you record the playoffs are a whole new season and with the Bears winning 2 of their last 3 games they may be ready to down another giant. Stay Tuned…..

Ricky Knelsen posts First at OFSAA Regional meet

SIMCOE REFORMER MAY 31 10

At the regional track and field championships in Windsor Rick Knelsen of Valley Heights claimed his spot at the provincial event by winning the midget boys high jump, while Celina DeCarolis of Holy Trinity will advance thanks to a pair of second place finishes in the midget girls long and high jump events.

Knelsen didn’t just win; he dominated the field, registering 1.77m while second place was a full 6cm back with 1.71.

“I didn’t think I’d do that well, but as soon as I got up there I felt good and just had a great day,” said Knelsen.

“I thought a lot of them would be able to jump a lot higher, but I went in there and did my best and jumped higher than them.”

Knelsen will now go into the OFSAA event in London as one of the favourites and have a legitimate shot at bringing home a medal.

“Not many people from Valley get a chance to go to OFSAA, and it’s my first year -Grade 9 -and I’m going, that’s pretty good,” he said.

The height of 1.77m was a new personal best, one that Knelsen will try to stretch at the end of this week.

“I hadn’t really thought too much about it (afterwards), but now I’m thinking I want to jump 1.80m,” he said. “That’s my goal.”

Senior Girls Basketball Appear to be Contenders

As the season kicked off this week for our Senior girls basketball team it appears they have huge potential. They started play against HT on Tuesday evening with great success as a very experienced Titan squad struggled with the Bears. On Thursday the Bears easily beat the Lakers in Dover before playing in the SCS tournament on Saturday. Playing SCS in the first game the Bears exchanged leads for all four quarters before a let down late in the game. The second game they handled easily the Paris Panthers before playing a late day grudge match with the Titan of Holy Trinity. It appears that our senior team can play with any team in the league and should be real playoff contenders.

Valley Height’s Hosted Junior & Senior Volleyball Tournament

Yesterday was a busy day at VHSS as 12 teams travelled to VHSS for a Girls Volleyball Tournament.  The teams which came from as far away as Dunnville participated in a round-robin style tournament  all day and gave our teams some great practice for the upcoming NSSAA finals.  Cross-county rivals DDSS and SCS were present and after all was said and done both the Junior and Senior teams came out on top winning both divisions of the tournament.

Mr. Reimer, Mrs. Pineo, and Mr. Vermeulen all helped make the event a great success.  Way to go Bears!  We are really looking forward to the upcoming championships.

New Students Visit VHSS

Tomorrow morning we will serve breakfast to grade 8 students who are potential VHSS students in 2009-10.  After students indulge in some good eats they will see a multimedia presentation and then be given a tour of the school followed by some prizes and a parting gift.  Our students this morning on announcements were encouraged by Mrs. Atkinson to wear school colours and show respect and show the spirit that makes our school such a great place.  I am really looking forward to meeting with the future prospects for Valley Heights.

On another note yesterday the Senior Boys basketball team travelled to Holy Trinity and spanks the Titans.  This extends senior team to a very impressive 2-0 record. GO BEARS!

Senior Boys Basketball Shows Promise

After not being able to win a game last year the Senior boys basketball team posted a win in their first game of the season Thursday night.  This game came after having to miss the season opener on Tuesday due to the fact that Delhi Raiders folded their senior team.  While the team still has much work to go Mr. Vermeulen is looking forward to being very competitive this year.

In other action Thursday our Senior and Junior girls volleyball teams beat Pt Dover in 3 and 5 games respectively while our junior boys lost a nailbiter in overtime.  Great Start Bears.
